Heritage Auctions: Sunday Internet Comics – Jan 22
Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

250 lots. Highlights including material on the Dreyfus affair, examples of antisemitic propaganda, a manuscript from 1760 from Victor François Duke of Broglie guaranteeing the safety and liberty of the Jewish community in Worms (lot 37), ephemera and photographs related to the Holocaust, and a complete set of the extremely rare Roman Vishniac portfolio ‘The Vanished World’ (est. €15,000-€18,000). An incomplete set of ‘The Vanished World’ (11 of 12 photographs present) sold at Sotheby’s in 2011 for $25,000.
Learn more »Fine Literature with Lawrence Ferlinghetti & the Beats (PBA Galleries, Auction 610)
443 lots will be offered at PBA Galleries in Auction 610 (“Fine Literature with Lawrence Ferlinghetti & the Beats”) on March 23. Highlights include first editions of Tolkien’s The Hobbit (est. $25,000-$35,000), The Lord of the Rings trilogy (est. $10,000-$15,000), the quite rare first American edition of The Hobbit (est. $8,000-$12,000). As experienced collectors know, these books are very difficult to find in top condition; many copies that appear show considerable wear or worse. The copies offered at PBA, while respectable enough, are certainly not top copies, though at the right price they merit consideration as demand for first editions of The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy remains strong.
Other notable lots include a nice copy of the first printing of Frank Herbert’s Dune (est. $2500-$3500), a copy of the very rare author’s edition of Kenneth Patchen’s Fables and Other Little Tales (limited to 50 copies) and roughly 100 lots by or about Charles Bukowski (no surprise for a PBA sale), a decent copy of the first English edition of Henry Roth’s Call it Sleep (with a rather high estimate); though it should be noted that a slightly nicer copy of the same is available from Royal Books for $300.
The full catalogue is here.

280 Lots offered.
Among the most interesting lots on offer is the very rare first edition of Frederich Spee’s Cautio Criminalis, an attack on the wave of witch-hunts and the use of torture in Germany in the 1620s that led to the brutal torture and execution of hundreds of women, men and children. Published anonymously, Spee’s work, the first of its kind, has been recognized as “one of the most stirring examples of an individual speaking truth to power” (Marcus Hellyer). (Very rare. Searching rarebookhub and ABPC yields just one auction result.) The estimate is £2000-3000 (lot 7). Interested in witches? Sokol Books has a first edition of the exceptionally rare Discoverie of Witchcraft.
Lot 176 is a 1972 Cambridge University Press facsimile of the important third edition of Newton’s Principia, the last edition published in Newton’s lifetime and the basis for all subsequent editions. For collectors interested in acquiring the 1726 edition itself, Milestones of Science offers a large paper copy in contemporary calf for €29,000.
Lot 252 is a rare collection of photographs by Henry Ponting, published in 1905 by Ogawa Kazuma. “One of his main achievements was to develop the collotype as a means of attaining a wider audience than was obtainable through the souvenir albums that were so popular at the time. Herbert Ponting, the photographer, is perhaps best known for his photographs of the 1910 Antarctic Expedition, but he lived in Japan from 1901 to 1906 resulting in at least two books” (Bloomsbury’s cataloguer note). Estimate is £500-700.
Subjects in the sale include English Literature (50 lots), Travel & Topography (39 lots), Children’s & Illustrated books (29 lots), Modern first editions (20 lots), Maps (20 lots), Continental Literature (17 lots), Natural history (10 lots), and Art & Architecture (7 lots).
